What is the National Entry Assessment?

The RACGP National Entry Assessment is an online situational judgement test (SJT) delivered by Acuity Insights, known as the Casper test. It's a required step for anyone applying to the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program or the Fellowship Support Program (FSP).

The assessment evaluates your ability to reflect on and respond to interpersonal and professional dilemmas using critical reasoning and social interpretation. It does not test clinical knowledge.

Who needs to take it?

All eligible applicants for the AGPT 2027 or FSP 2026.2 programs must complete this assessment. You'll need an Australian or New Zealand medical registration number when booking.

You can only sit the assessment once per calendar year (1 January–31 December). If your performance doesn't meet the required standard, you won't be eligible to apply for any RACGP programs for the remainder of that year.

How to prepare

Register a free account with Acuity Insights as early as possible. This gives you access to a full 11-scenario practice assessment and the ability to submit special consideration requests.

Caspermate provides additional timed practice scenarios that mirror the real format, so you can build confidence with the timing and response structure before sitting the actual test.

Assessment Format

11 scenarios with 22 questions total, lasting approximately 65–85 minutes including optional breaks. The test is remotely proctored via webcam.

1

Section 1: Video Responses (4 scenarios)

You watch a video scenario, then answer 2 questions presented one at a time. You have 1 minute to record each video response via webcam. Caspermate practice mirrors this format but captures audio only (no video is recorded or stored), so you can focus on what you say without worrying about being on camera.

2

Section 2: Typed Responses (7 scenarios)

You read a written scenario with 2 questions presented together. You have 3.5 minutes to type your responses. Speech-to-text and dictation software are not permitted unless pre-approved.

3

Scoring & Results

Responses are evaluated on the 9 competencies. Approximately 4–5 weeks after sitting, you receive a quartile score via Acuity Insights. Quartiles are not used to determine offers, but falling below the required standard means no further progression.

9 Competencies Assessed

The assessment evaluates your ability to reflect on and respond to interpersonal and professional dilemmas. It does not test clinical knowledge, though some scenarios may be set in clinical environments.

How long is the Casper test?

The Casper test for AGPT runs for approximately 65–85 minutes including the optional breaks between sections. The test itself comprises 11 scenarios: 4 video-response scenarios (with 1 minute to record each answer) and 7 typed-response scenarios (with 3 minutes 30 seconds to type both answers). Most candidates finish in roughly 75 minutes from start to submission. You should plan for a full 90-minute window to allow for setup, ID verification, and unforeseen tech checks before the timer starts.

Is the Casper test in Australia the same as overseas Casper?

The Casper test in Australia for AGPT entry is built on the same Acuity Insights platform used internationally, but it is a separate sitting from the Casper used by North American medical schools, dental schools, or teacher-training programs. Key Australian-specific differences:

  • Administrator: the RACGP runs the AGPT sitting; Acuity Insights handles platform delivery.
  • Cost: AUD $190 in Australia; pricing differs in other markets.
  • Format: the Australian Casper for AGPT is the longer typed + video SJT format, not the shorter multiple-choice variant some non-medical programs use.
  • Eligibility: only doctors with AHPRA registration (or eligibility for it) and PGY2+ experience can sit the AGPT version.
